How an American art piece can be transformed into a new model
Paper sculptures are still a niche industry in the United States, but that’s changing.
An artist has just been selected to create a new paper sculpture based on an old photograph.
The artist, Sarah Schulz, created the work on a white canvas, called the “Paper Statue,” and will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning Feb. 7.
It’s the first time an American has created a paper sculpture of an actual human figure.
Schulz said she hopes the paper statue will draw people into the art world.
She said she wanted to explore the idea of “an object that speaks directly to our humanity and our connection to it.”
She wanted to capture that moment of beauty and intimacy when the sun shines through a flowery wall and an old man, dressed in a cowboy hat and cowboy boots, is walking by.
The sculpture will take up the entire museum’s exhibition space and will include a full gallery showing its creation, as well as other pieces from the Metropolitan’s collections.
A public auction is scheduled for Feb. 11.
“It’s the most exciting piece I’ve ever worked on,” said Schulz.
“I’ve always thought that it’s important for the art community to have these beautiful images of humanity.
And now that I have this piece, I feel that it is my duty to share that with the world.”
Schulz’s first paper sculpture was created in the early 1980s.
She created the statue to honor her late father, George Schulz of Long Island, N.Y., who died in 2012.
He was the director of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Schiller Museum of Modern Art and an internationally known artist.
George Schulz had a passion for sculpture and was a founding member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He died of a heart attack in 2004.
The paper sculpture will include the artist’s original sketch and the artist who created it.
It will also include a photograph of the artist, who she said was a friend of her father.
“There are people who don’t see themselves in the sculpture,” she said.
“But it has the power to connect with me.”
She said the paper sculpture captures the feeling of her mother, who was born in Germany and died in New York City, as she walked by.
She also wanted the piece to convey the idea that the sculpture was made for the museum.
“This piece is really just a reminder of how much the art industry is important to me,” she added.
The Metropolitan Museum is one of many art museums around the world that have created new or renovated their galleries over the past decade.
The Met has become an international hub for art and art history, where visitors can see works of art in museums, galleries and private collections.
